Getting a USB printer to work

I've got an HP Deskjet 3550 printer connected via USB.
I've been trying to get it printing for the past couple of days but couldn't.
I've installed the latest CUPS (1.1.21rc2) and the hpijs driver for it.
After adding the printer to cups I chose the right driver for it ("HP
DeskJet 3550 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)") and tried a test print.
CUPS says it went ok, but when I look under "completed jobs" I see its
status as "aborted", and, of course, nothing was printed. When I try
restarting the job I get an error "client-error-not-possible".

I'm running Slackware 10, 2.4.26 (with the usb printer module loaded
and it recognizes my printer).
