OK, I finally got around to reboot the system with the new modules.

What I did:

1. I already had the 2.6.7 compiled with the built-in 1.0.4 alsa
modules.
2. I FTP'ed alsa 1.0.5a from alsa-project.org, compiled as instructed
and installed on top of the modules which came with the kernel.
3. Rebooted the system.
4. Checked all mixer settings, made sure artsd is not running and (to
double-check) that the KDE sound system is disabled.

Still get the same results - weak sound output.

Any other ideas?

(I'm now even under more pressure since Skype now supports calling
POTS phones and my partner is in dire need to stay in touch with
abroad on the shoestring).

Thanks,
