I hate the these changes too, I've used Galeon beforehand because it was
a bit more configurable then Mozilla. The footprint on a 256MB machine
is not that important to me.
The move is intended to simplify configuration for the novice user.
However for those who want the extra configuration it's quite bad. I
myself switched to mozilla, added the PrefBar add-on and got back most
of what I wanted. There is also an add-on that is supposed to reveal all
configuration entries of Mozilla so you can change them.
The move to user-friendliness is fine, but it shouldn't reduce existing
functionality for those who want it. An option (even hidden in text
files) to enable advanced configuration is the best in my opinion. It
will enable the newbies to have a simple configurations and me full
control.
