Try your distro's latest errata kernel. Try the latest 2.4.20
(2.4.20-pre5) kernel. Try the latest 2.5 kernel (2.5.64). If any of
them work, excellent. If not, contact the USB maintainer (Greg KH) and
submit a bug report with full information.
Even if the device doesn't work, it shouldn't crash the kernel.
