I don't use anything like that, so I cannot attest to usability etc.

There is Beagle, http://beaglewiki.org/Main_Page, and Kat,
http://kat.mandriva.com.

As far as I understand, beagle uses Lucene behind the scenes, which
may be relevant/useful/interesting for you as well. Check it out at
http://lucene.apache.org/. I think Lucene (or parts thereof) is
included in Fedora Core 4 Extras.
