one thing that comes to my head:
start the computer with a disket with tomsrtbt on it, or something else.
try to mount the partition, and see what happen.
try to mount it to /mnt that the disket created.
try to mount your root partition, then mount the partition to its
original place where it stucked befor.
see it that hangs.
