To answer the original question (with my opinion, of course).
The ways that groups of legal standing (such as Hamakor) in the world
are defending peoples usage rights vs the abuse of copyright by
financially interested parties, is by:
1. Choosing cases in which the law in action is shown to contradict
higher laws (Hot Yesod, in our case, I guess), and defending those,
trying to pull down the current law.
2. Choosing cases in which the law is abused, and defending the
helpless, in hope to deter from meritless suits.
3. Finding cases that show that any law contradicts commonly accepted
values, and lobbying to make the law fit the values, instead of natural
entropy process, which moves in the other direction.
I (as a member) think all of the above should be things that Hamakor
should do.
Specifically, we should think how to prevent the "harmonization" of our
laws with US laws in a way that will bring us the DMCA, perpetual
copyright and other such beauties.
I personally think copyright is an obsolete mechanism, and should be
removed, but I consider this an over ambitious goal for Hamakor.
But I think we should consider our goals and means in this area.
OTOH (thinking about other message in this thread), considering its
public fora, permanent archives, and some other reasons, Hamakor is a
truly terrible place to organize any non-lawful activities, even in the
name of ethically based civil dissent. So in addition to being unwanted,
I think that debate is really misplaced here.
